Robin Geffen is an experienced
fund manager yet it is
doubtful that even he has seen
volatility on this kind of global
scale before.
Given the freezing of credit
markets and the banking failures
during the quarter, his
Neptune Global Equity Fund
treated the financial sector
that is at the heart of the
current liquidity crisis with
extreme caution.
Geffen says: “We were also
wary of consumer-facing companies
in the OECD markets,
given the slowdown experienced
in the West.
“While Russia and China
were affected by falling
commodities prices, our exposure
in these markets was

“Increasing intra-trade
levels combined with decisive
fiscal policy boosted Russian
and Chinese consumer confidence
which, along with
infrastructure projects, will be
the key drivers of their GDP
growth,” he adds.
Geffen is synonymous
with emerging market investing,
particularly in Russia, so
it is no surprise that he is
incredibly upbeat on emerging
markets describing them
as the primary engines of
global growth for the medium
to long term.
Over a third of his global
fund is invested in emerging
markets (35%), while he is
also maintaining a high cash
holding (21%). Geffen also
holds 19% in the UK, with
15% in Europe ex UK.
