A time for forward thinking
Giving awards at a time like this is incredibly difficult
– rewarding a fund manager for not losing quite as
much money as everyone else does not send the
most positive vibe out into an already troubled
environment.
However, in putting together these awards, the
second Portfolio Adviser Fund Awards, we asked
our hand-picked, independent judging panel to
consider where they would invest their money today,
taking a forward-looking view, rather than simply

The universe of funds is the same
as that for Portfolio Adviser: all
regulated UK-domiciled funds plus
all offshore funds registered for sale
in the UK.
Morningstar then put in place
a quants screen to get the top 20
to 30 funds in each category,
sorted by risk-adjusted returns.

The minimum track record for
a fund to qualify was three years
except for the best equity
newcomer, which had to have at
least a 12-month performance
record. This is a positive change
from last year’s inaugural awards
where there were not enough
property and absolute return funds
rewarding past performance.
It is vital for us as an editorial team that we
constantly look ahead at where performance is going
to come from rather than bemoaning problems of the
past that are largely out of our control.
Our intention is to reward those funds that are
best positioned for future performance in today’s
environment – and our congratulations to all of
the winners and highly commended funds and
their managers.
